English Girl in Vienna

Cultural Commentator

About this Blog

There is nothing stronger than a person’s culture. It’s impossible to get rid of; it is engrained. That’s what makes people from one country different to people from another. It’s also what makes us the same; everybody has a culture driving them, a culture through which everything gets filtered, interpreted, evaluated.

This blog observes the differences between me, an English girl, and the Viennese; how we do things differently; how we see things; how we adapt to each other; where we will bend and where we won’t; how I interpret life in this beautiful city.

I love your blog! It’s really interesting/thought-provoking/hilarious for me as an Austrian living in Vienna to get an exterior perspective on things that sometimes are so natural to me (not the FKK bit though…). I had no idea there were so many strange things in Austria…

    • Hi Bernhard, thanks for reading my blog. It’s good to know there’s an Austrian reading this. You guys certainly keep me entertained and there’s plenty to think about living in this gorgeous city. Enjoy this warm spell of weather before the cold comes back (look at me talking about the weather – how British of me!).

  2. I love your blog. I’m an American student in Vienna and I have noticed a lot of the same Austrian “quirks” as you have. I loved your post about the smiling….my roommate always makes fun of me for smiling at random people, but I just can’t help it! It’s so much fun comparing and contrasting cultures here.

I also enjoyed your post about the Vienna wine. I really want to explore that part of the city more! Thanks for all of the awesome information 🙂

    Hi there,
    really nice blog! 🙂
I am Austrian, living in New Orleans with my American husband. Thinking about moving back to Vienna in spring though.
What do you work as? Did you say you teach?
The work part is what’s freaking my husband out the most. So if you want to share your own “success story” or have other English-speaking expats with same, I’d love to hear about that! 🙂
Have a fabulous day in pre-Christmassy Vienna … God, how I miss it.

  4. Hilarious blog, such a great read, thank you! I am an Australian living in London with my Viennese husband and we are currently contemplating a move to Vienna. How easy has it been to make non-German speaking friend? Could you write an entry on the different districts of Vienna?
